Mohican Juvenile Facility Epiphany #6

Several of us from the outpost are heading out on a mission at mohican juvenile corrections facility for an epiphany weekend outreach. the students helped last week making placemats and posters to show Agape (God's love) to the 30 young men that the team from epiphany of ohio will be serving.

one way folks on the outside can support the weekend is through the 72 prayer vigil. please take a moment and add your name to the list. we'll print it out and and your name as a link in a prayer chain that will be unveiled on the first day to the young men during a talk that i will give entitled "you are not alone".

i can not tell you the impact that it has...it is beyond words. on the four other teams i have served on many of the boys begin to cry when the realize that "folks...they don't even know will be praying for them." here's a post from the weekend in november.

i pray you'll be blessed.

weekly wrapup 05.03.09

Lesson Topic: Live Love - Week 4 - Love in Action - take away:
  • learned that words and feelings are not enough; everything we have needs to be used to show the love of God.
  • commit to give something or someone else as an act of selfless love.
Attendance: average
'Fun' Factor: things got started on their own with a game of cards and spoons...and they had probably too much fun...(the adults that is...)

and there was some upfront silliness with the neato cheeto game...the old shaving cream beard and toss cheetos on it trick.
Volunteer Involvement: we were missing a few tonite. it was another emmaus weekend and some of our adults were absent.
Music: we went without any music tonite...veneration had the nite off.
Student Response: we used a three videos to get the point across. many of our folks hadn't seen the susan boyle video so began with that. and talked in big group about the assumptions we make based on appearances and how that can keep us from risking to reach out and love others. after small groups we came back together talked about how to really show our love in action. we talked about what makes things valuable...each student was handed a coffee bean as they came back in. showed another video about a rare coffee...kopi luwak
that comes from cat poo and sells for $500 a lb. some students had already tasted their bean and weren't quite sure what to think. we wrapped up the teaching time with a powerful video from the doorpost film project about clayton mcdonald. clayton was 19 when he died. this video was just completed literally the day after his going to be with Jesus on March 16, 2009. it is a power testimony to a life lived well. it was also a perfect way to end the live love series and to help focus our collective minds on our summer mission project dare2serve.
